On the way to Alexandria Egypt, your guide will explain ancient Egyptian history and he will introduce you to Greco-Roman history till you will reach your first stop. The Catacombs of Kom El Shuqafa or the largest Roman Cemetery which is consisting of three levels cut in the rock under the ground level. Catacombs date back to the Greco-Roman era and it was cut in the rock to a depth of 35 meters.
Then you visit Pompey’s Pillar, the red granite column which is 28 meters high and from an inscription in Greek written on the column we know it was not for Pompey as the Crusaders believe but was erected like a Memorial column for Diocletian, the Roman emperor.
Then you will head to the western edge of Alexandria to visit from the Citadel of Qaitbay which dates back to 1480 AD. Sultan El Ashraf Qaitbay built a series of castles fortresses along the Egyptian seashore in order to fortify the Egyptian coast line against the Ottomans. So, he built the citadel on the site of the lighthouse of Alexandria using some of its stones.
